Methodology

The engineering team contracted a professional 3D scanning company to conduct the laser scanning. Mija Survey Ltd used a high-precision 3D laser scanner to capture the plant’s conditions in detail. The laser scanner emitted a laser beam that reflected off the plant’s surfaces, creating point clouds that accurately represented the plant’s physical features. The laser scanning was conducted in several phases to ensure that all plant areas were covered.

The point cloud data was then processed using specialized software to create 3D models of the plant’s structures and equipment. The models were accurate to within a few millimetres, providing the client with precise measurements for the renovation process. The 3D models were also helpful in visualizing the plant’s layout and identifying potential design issues before construction began.

Result

3D laser scanning provided several benefits to the water treatment plant’s renovation project. First, the as-built models created from the point cloud data were highly accurate and provided detailed measurements of the plant’s structures and equipment. This helped the client to identify potential design conflicts and make more informed decisions during the renovation process.

Second, the 3D models provided a clear and detailed visualization of the plant’s layout, which helped plan the placement of new equipment and ensure that existing equipment was adequately positioned. The models were also valuable for communicating the project’s progress to stakeholders, including contractors and city officials.

Finally, using 3D laser scanning helped save time and reduce costs during the renovation process. Because the models accurately represented the plant’s existing conditions, the client could make more informed decisions about design and construction, reducing the need for costly rework and delays.

Conclusion

The use of 3D laser scanning was a valuable tool in renovating the water treatment plant. The as-built models created from the point cloud data provided accurate measurements and a detailed visualization of the plant’s layout, which helped the engineering team to make informed decisions during the renovation process. 3D laser scanning also helped save time and reduce costs, making the project more efficient and effective.
